Today, as part of its ongoing Neighborhood x Neighborhood effort, NYC & Company is spotlighting two of the Bronx’s most vibrant areas—Arthur Avenue and Fordham Road—as the next installments of this borough-wide initiative. The United Kingdom, one of the City’s most intrepid markets, remains the City’s number one source of overseas travelers; last year NYC welcomed 1,033,000 visitors from the UK. As part of NYC & Company’s mission to maximize travel and tourism opportunities throughout the five boroughs, NYC & Company traveled this week to London with a delegation of 32 NYC businesses to promote travel to New York City while touting Arthur Avenue and Fordham Road in the Bronx as a must-visit destination full of fine dining, exceptional cultural institutions and vibrant retail shops.
Arthur Avenue:
· The Arthur Avenue Retail Market is home to recently opened shops and third-generation establishments where visitors can find a wide selection of cured meats, cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables, and boutique goods.
· A family-owned business, Biancardi’s is traditional butcher shop with a strong customer base of regulars who consistently return for its quality meats. The knowledgeable and friendly staff can help newbies navigate their vast selection of meats, including beef, pork, sausage, poultry and specialty items.
· Open for more than 70 years, Borgatti’s Ravioli & Egg Noodles specializes in fresh pastas and ravioli. Its egg noodles are cut to order and come in flavors such as squid ink, carrot, mushroom and tomato. Customers also have the privilege of viewing the pasta-making process on the machines behind the counter.
· New Yorkers and visitors line up for Casa Della Mozzarella’s famous hand-pulled, homemade mozzarella, available salted or unsalted, in bite-sized or larger mozzarella balls. The shop also sells meats, pastas, cookies and sandwiches.
· Cerini Coffee & Gifts is paradise for lovers of coffee or kitchenware. With coffee beans, flavored syrups, specialty Italian foods and gift baskets, the family-owned and -operated store is an Arthur Avenue fixture.
· A traditional fish market on Arthur Avenue, Cosenza’s Fish Market offers an impressive selection of fresh fish and shellfish. Shoppers also enjoy the outdoor raw-oyster-and-clam bar.
· DeLillo Cafe & Pastry Shop sells homemade Italian deserts, including cannoli, sfogliatelle and biscotti. During the summer months, patrons can enjoy DeLillo’s Italian gelato on its outdoor patio.
· A third-generation pastry shop, Madonia Brothers Bakery is a favorite of New Yorkers from every borough. The Sicilian bakery sells traditional Italian desserts and savory breads in flavors like jalapeño, provolone and black olive.
· Pasquale’s Rigoletto transports visitors to Italy with its colorful murals and authentic menu of fettucine alfredo, gnocchi bolognese and more. Friendly servers suggest completing the experience with a slice of homemade cheesecake.
· A family-style restaurant known for large portions, Roberto’s Restaurant serves country-style Italian dishes. The menu includes fusilli pasta with clams, mussels, shrimp and tomatoes; cavatelli with Italian sausage and broccoli rabe; and penne with grilled eggplant and smoked mozzarella in a light tomato sauce. The team behind Roberto’s also owns Zero Otto Nove, a rustic Italian restaurant around the corner.
· Open since 1915, Teitel Brothers is a wholesale and retail gourmet Italian deli. The shop is a favorite of restaurants from around the country for its quality ingredients, including cheese, roasted peppers and oils.
Fordham Road:
· Fordham Road is a bustling retail district in the Bronx. With plenty of shops offering local and national brands, Fordham Road is a great place to purchase hip sneakers, comics, jeans and more. The neighborhood’s dynamic, urban vibe is unique to New York City, and some of the City’s most popular cultural institutions are just a short walk from the central retail destination.
· The 265-acre, world-famous Bronx Zoo has more than 6,000 animals that are housed in re-creations of their natural habitats. Exhibits include a sea lion pool and African plains featuring lions, zebras and gazelles.
· Selling both menswear and women’s styles, Dr. Jay’s is a go-to shop for trendy sneakers, jeans, sweatshirts, hats and more. Fashion lines featured include Baby Phat, G-Unit and L.A.M.B.
· Visitors to the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage can see where the poet spent the final years of his life and wrote some of his most important works, including “Annabel Lee” and “The Bells.” The 19th-century cottage was restored to its original appearance and is open for visitation and guided tours.
· Fordham Comics sells a vast collection of vintage and new comic books, action figures and arcade games. Local comic lovers frequent the store to play card games and check out new collectors’ items.
· Visitors to the vibrant neighborhood can grab a quick bite at Gyro King. In addition to the highly praised chicken and lamb gyros, the restaurant serves pizza, shish kebabs and ice cream.
· Featuring more than a million plants on their 250-acre campus, the New York Botanical Garden is a favorite spot of New Yorkers and visitors from all over the world. During the first two weekends in November, visitors can immerse themselves in fall foliage during the garden’s Fall Forest Weekends. And November 16–January 12, the celebrated Holiday Train Show features model trains that ride through handcrafted replicas of NYC landmarks.
· Registered landmark Paradise Theater, built in 1929, is now home to World Changers Church of New York. Visitors can get a glimpse at the theater’s ornate architecture and sculptures during Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday services.
· For a quick bite to eat, Primavera Café serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and is open 24/7. The extensive menu includes omelets, panini and salads, and their buffet offers more than 200 different recipes.
Visitors looking to experience the Bronx for longer than an afternoon can stay at the Opera House Hotel in the South Bronx, which recently opened in August. The historic Bronx Opera House, a storied entertainment venue dating back to 1913, has been restored to unveil this newly renovated hotel. The boutique-style property has spacious rooms and amenities include flat-screen TVs, complimentary WiFi and complimentary continental breakfast.
Neighborhood x Neighborhood, launched in March 2013, is an initiative designed to increase visitation, support local businesses and encourage exploration in areas outside traditional tourist locations across the five boroughs. Since the program began, we have highlighted Bushwick, Flatbush and Williamsburg in Brooklyn; the South Bronx; Lower Manhattan; Coney Island, Brooklyn; Corona, Forest Hills and Jackson Heights in Queens; Inwood, Harlem and Washington Heights in Manhattan; Staten Island’s North Shore; and Long Island City, Queens.

New York City is made up of five distinct boroughs: Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. The Neighborhood x Neighborhood initiative intends to spotlight the affordability and accessibility of neighborhoods across the five boroughs with a particular emphasis on areas that have seen new hotel development in recent years. Neighborhoods and featured highlights were chosen in collaboration with City Council officials, Department of Cultural Affairs, NYC Small Business Services, business development districts, community leaders and with consideration of NYC & Company’s 2,000 members.
