Abbey of Cluny – Philippe Berthé©CM Paris |
An abbey with important reach throughout Europe in the Middle Ages.
The Benedictine Abbey of Cluny was founded in the 10th
century. Over the centuries, its vast Abbey church extended its
influence over the whole of Europe. Explore the many monastic
buildings and remains of the vast church, the “Maïor Ecclesia”,
partially destroyed after the French Revolution. The 18th century
cloisters offer a view of the chapterhouse and the remains of
the choir from the second church. The Farinier (granary) in the
grounds has retained its 18th century framework. The Jean de
Bourbon Palais was built in the late 15th century by one of the
great Abbots of Cluny, from which it takes its name. Built in the
Flamboyant Gothic style, the palace is now home to the museum
of art and archaeology, with a large collection of religious and
civil Romanesque sculptures from houses in the town, the abbey
and the surrounding area.
