Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano at LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura
Curated by Tobia Bezzola and Francesca Benini
Until July 28, 2019, the Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana, in collaboration with the Swiss National Museum in Zurich and the Federal Office of Culture, presents a major exhibition dedicated to the collection of the Gottfried Keller Foundation. The exhibition brings together the main masterpieces of the federal art collection housed in Swiss museums, including works by Hodler, Segantini, and Giacometti.
Almost 60 years since its last public presentation, the Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana (MASI) hosts the masterpieces of the Gottfried Keller Foundation, one of the most important national collections of Swiss art from the 12th to the 20th century. The exhibition, curated by director Tobia Bezzola and Francesca Benini, a scientific collaborator of the museum, mainly includes paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, with significant forays into earlier centuries, documenting some of the major figures of Swiss artists.
In particular, the majestic triptych of the Alps by Giovanni Segantini is exceptionally present in the exhibition, brought to Lugano from the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz.

Until June 16, 2019, the Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana presents a major retrospective on Swiss surrealism, organized in collaboration with the Aargauer Kunsthaus. Titled Swiss Surrealism, the exhibition explores both the influence the movement had on Swiss artistic production and the contribution of Swiss artists in defining it. Artists include Hans Arp, Alberto Giacometti, Paul Klee, and Meret Oppenheim.
Moving from the question “Is there a Swiss surrealism?” the Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana (MASI) and the Aargauer Kunsthaus delve deeply into the theme of surrealism in Switzerland, an important chapter in national art history. The two exhibition venues present a new major retrospective, divided into two different setups. The first, in Aarau from September 1, 2018, to January 2, 2019, focused on historical surrealism and its influence on contemporary art. The second, at MASI from February 10 to June 16, 2019, focuses solely on the historical manifestations of surrealism up to the late 1950s, curated by museum director Tobia Bezzola with Francesca Benini, scientific collaborator at MASI.
